What Does ‘Regulated’ Actually Mean?

The word ‘regulated’ gets used a lot in finance, often as decoration. But it has a precise meaning, and understanding it is one of the most protective things an investor can do.

A regulated fund operates under rules set by a government-recognised financial authority, covering how it is structured, how it reports, and how investor money is protected. For Coinsolation, that authority is the Mauritius Financial Services Commission (FSC), a respected international regulator that granted our license to operate as a Collective Investment Scheme only after formal review of our structure, governance, service providers, and documentation.

Why it matters to you is simple: regulation means independent oversight. A regulated fund cannot do whatever it likes with your money. Rules on custody, audits that examine the books, and reporting requirements keep the fund answerable, not once, at launch, but continuously. The license is not a certificate on a wall; it is an ongoing obligation.

It also gives you something concrete to check. Before investing in any fund, ours included, ask five questions: who regulates it, and can the licence be verified directly with the regulator; who are the independent administrator, custodian, and auditor, and can they be looked up; is there a formal offering document setting out terms in writing; what are the fees, and on what basis does the manager get paid; and if the fund closes, is the wind-down process defined. A legitimate fund answers all five without hesitation. Evasion on any one of them is your answer.

One final precision, because honesty requires it: regulation protects process, not returns. A regulated fund can still lose money: markets move, and no regulator prevents that. What it protects you from is the other kind of loss: misstatement, misappropriation, and structures where no one independent is watching. Knowing the difference between market risk and structural risk marks an informed investor, and the next segment gives you a framework for weighing both.
